Michener’s written materials do not imply that Bora Bora is any less magnificent than Moorea. In fact, he described this island as, “so stunning, that there are really no adequate words to describe it.” Palm-covered bungalows circle the shimmering lagoon like a delicate necklace. They adorn the base of an extinct volcano that rises up in two peaks. Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu soar to a height of 2,385 ft. Their slopes and valleys blossom with hibiscus. White-sand beaches meet emerald waters. Beneath the surface, delicate coral gardens remain the property of tiny parti-colored fish and giant manta rays.
Bora Bora has many attractions, from private submarines to helicopter excursions. Hike, or rent a bike or car, to explore the island. Shop for Tahitian pearls, but check that trademarks are granted by local companies to avoid buying fakes. Original art, perfumes and oils, and precious wood handicrafts also make beautiful keepsakes. Visit the St. Regis or Four Seasons for five-star dining and spa options. Island endorsement by these companies draws honeymooners and romantics to its shores.
