VINTAGE 90: A Classic Sailing Sloop Story

Vintage custom sailing yacht charter crew

VINTAGE, is the extraordinary build of an Owner who set out to design the yacht of his dreams. The build is foremost a sailing machine, but with “a lot of quirks” built in for family comfort. She is equipped for adventure. The spacious interiors and top grade equipment; water maker, generators, fuel tanks and huge freezer, make it possible to anchor out for an entire month, should the itinerary, or the mood, call for it.

The design brief was inspired by the iconic builds of the Owner’s great hero, Nathaneal Greene Herreshoff. This innovative American naval architect and mechanical engineer was a genius of the Golden Age of Yachting. America’s aristocracy, including Jay Gould, William Randolph Hearst, John Pierpont Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt III, Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, William Kissam Vanderbilt II, Harry Payne Whitney and Alexander Smith Cochran, owned Herreshoff yachts. He produced a succession of undefeated America’s Cup defenders, including 144’ RELIANCE, between 1893-1920. He also received the first US patent for a sailing catamaran.

The Owner created his design brief based on Herreshoff lines above the waterline, but the hull and keel are a modern design. He brought the plans for his classic sloop to Polish naval architect Juliusz Strawinski, a designer with experience drawing dreams that become realities. Strawinski completed the design to ensure seaworthy perfection and code compliance.

The aluminum skeleton, all welded sections, mechanicals, engine, pumps, etc, were built in Poland and the Czech Republic. Then the yacht was brought to a small shipyard in the Flemish part of Belgium where all the handcrafted joinery and contemporary interior furnishings were constructed.

The Select Yachts team toured the yacht and met the charming crew in Antigua. The Owner is super flexible as to where they charter in the Caribbean. Captain Manu says “We’re here to sail, so if guests want to be in Martinique, it’s only a day and a half to get down there. We just raise the sails and go, no need to worry about fuel. We fish along the way, so the Chef has a freezer full of fillets, perfect for sashimi for the guests.”

Summers are spent in the Mediterranean. Last season, the crew of three, Captain Manuel Lizé from France, Chef Marinella Bozic from Slovenia, and Stew Emma Jones from England, spent several enviable months in Montenegro and Croatia. Again this summer, they will happily charter wherever guests want to be, from Greece to Spain. The Owner enjoys using the yacht wherever it happens to be when it is not booked.

VINTAGE is an especially perfect vessel for connoisseurs of classic yachts that want a true sailing experience without sacrifice to modern conveniences. Designed as a family yacht, she is also fabulous for charter groups with children. There’s lots of space below decks and plenty of sun pads on the bow. Plus, you will not find a more skilled, professional and endearing crew.
