Tigers Eye is a Hargrave 98, a build that perfectly suits casually elegant, interactive charters.
We were impressed by the layout of this motor yacht, with several key features that make her an excellent family charter option. Plus it is quite evident that Captain Joshua Claassen and the crew get along great with kids – of all ages.
We stepped on board luxury charter yacht Tigers Eye and immediately the Captain put us at ease with his charming repartee, his lighthearted temperament setting the stage for a most enjoyable visit. His great, great, grandfather was a Norwegian sea captain, sailing his own ship from Norway to San Francisco. Josh, with dark brown eyes and hair, may not have inherited Nordic looks, but certainly retained the family passion for the sea. Among many career accomplishments he was also an educator of children, which explains why, throughout our tour, he spoke about the fun he has with them when kids are on board.
The main salon on Tigers Eye is cozy and comfortable, designed in the golden brown tones of her namesake gem. Forward is the welcoming country kitchen. Josh told us that people like to spend time here, learning cooking tips from the chef or turning on the cooking channel and creating an impromptu meal for fun. The layout of Tigers Eye is conducive to interacting with the crew. While the crew is extremely capable of being discreet, should the clients prefer that, they can also be very witty, warm and entertaining.
Tigers Eye has four ensuite guest staterooms, a king master, queen VIP and two twins. One twin stateroom converts to a queen and the other has a Pullman berth, making the yacht ideal for three couples and three kids. The staterooms have individual entertainment and climate control systems. We commented on the lovely Shoji screened windows and Captain Josh grinned as he gave us the kid’s warning regarding concealed Ninjas.
The helm and skylounge on Tigers Eye are one open space, so guests can observe the Captain navigating when the yacht is underway. This is also a great place for the kids to hang out and watch TV while the adults are in the main salon relaxing, enjoying a glass of wine and adult conversation. The Captain reassures us that even without supervision the kids could not possibly do any harm, like throwing the controls into reverse. Here the day head has a door leading directly to the sun deck Jacuzzi, another smart feature for children that may need to use the bathroom while splashing about.
Captain Josh is a contender for the happiest Captain with the best sense of humor award. He likes to laugh and that is infectious. Tigers Eye charters in Florida and the Bahamas, waters the Captain says, he knows like the back of his hand and where everyone is happy. “You don’t have guests that aren’t happy there.” We tend to think that the pervasive happiness has everything to do with a superb yacht and delightful crew.
